Graphing the Phenomenon 002: Landsat Annual Timelapse 1984-2012

Landsat Annual Timelapse 1984-2012

Google provides online tools for users to access the world’s satellite imagery. Its availability allows “scientists, independent researchers, and nations to mine this massive warehouse of data to detect changes, map trends and quantify differences on the Earth’s surface,” says google. With Earth engine API, user can ” access and run algorithms on the full Earth Engine data archive.”  More information can be found at Google’s Earth Engine site that announces and introduces this ‘planetary-scale platform for environmental data and analysis’. This engine can turn massive information into stunning information visualization with which to explain things more touchy and more understandable.

Above those new technology and development, what most interesting to me are those zoomable landsat annual timelapse representations from 1984 to 2012. Time magazine reports severe issues regarding to the satellite stories, climate changes and urban explosions with the powerful visual representations of timelapses in Dubai, in Columbia Glacier, in the Amazon, and in Las Vegas.
