Dan Pink’s Drive: The surprising truth about what motivates us shows what motivates people– Reward & Punishment, Performance & Satisfaction…. “Our motivations are unbelievably engagingly amazing and interesting….,” as he says. His speech not only allows me review the motivation theory once again, but also inspires me how to educate pupils for higher motivation.

For mechanical skill– “Higher pay = Better performance, but once the task called for rudimentary cognitive skill, …let to poorer performance!” Pink also points out 3 factors lead to better performance & personal satisfaction– Autonomy, Mastery, and Purpose.

Pink says, “when the profit motive gets unmoored from the purpose motive, bad things happen.” It is incredibly true! For the purpose motive, “one day of autonomy produces things that never emerge.” Some technically sophisticated highly skilled people create and share. They are doing for free. They give away rather than sell it! –“It’s gonna be HUGE,” said Pink. Why are they doing so? …because those highly skilled people have jobs– they are paid to do sophisticated, technically challenging works.”Mastery”, is the urge to get better at stuff. Therefore, those highly skilled people are not only doing it for their employers, but for someone else for free. It sounds a strange economical behavior, but it is the hidden challenge mastery that could possibly make HUGE contribution. If we want to be a Purpose Maximiser, or want to have more Purpose Maximisers– how to motivate those intelligent people is one of several ways to make this world better!

We need long term plans and continuous execution. Otherwise, again, ” one day of autonomy produces things that never emerge.”
